About Us – Southgate Badminton Club (SBC)
Founded in 1966, Southgate Badminton Club (SBC) is one of Edmonton’s longest-standing recreational badminton clubs. Celebrating our Golden Jubilee in 2016, we have proudly served the community for over five decades.
We are a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to promoting the sport of badminton in a friendly, inclusive, and respectful environment. Our goal is to foster a culture of sportsmanship, fitness, and social connection through organized play for adult players of varying skill levels.
Whether you're visiting or new to the Edmonton area and have a passion for badminton, we warmly welcome you to join us for a game!
We are a friendly, inclusive, and diverse community of adult players who share a love for recreational badminton. If you're considering membership or just want to give it a try, you're invited to drop in on any of our scheduled game days.
🎯 Who Can Join?

Adults only (18+).

Players who demonstrate good sportsmanship and enjoy fun, friendly competition.

We do not accept junior/youth players, offer court rentals, training, coaching, or individual practice sessions.
🕓 Drop-In Policy

Drop-ins are welcome on a first-come, first-served basis.

Pay your drop-in fee of $5 via E-transfer to:

Submit the SBC Waiver Form (once per season: Sep 1 – Aug 31). 🔗 How to sign the waiver
📌 Rename the waiver file with YourName before submitting.

Arrive at least 5 minutes early to meet an SBC Executive for check-in.

Late arrivals: Join the lineup and start playing; an executive will meet you during a break.
If a game is canceled or you're unable to attend after payment, your fee will be honored at a future session.
Prefer to pay after confirmation? That's fine — but payment must be completed before entering the gym and shown at check-in.

🏸 Gameplay Rules & Court Etiquette

Shuttle: Yonex Mavis 350 (provided to AGM attendees & also available for members to purchase at $12/tube).

Format: Doubles preferred. Singles must yield to doubles if players are waiting.

Game System:
-
2 games to 21 points (rally scoring), unless there’s a long wait — then only 1 game.

Rotation is expected after each match.
-
Winning team decides whether to stay or let others rotate in.

🧠 Play Smart & Respectfully
-
Bring your own racquet, indoor shoes, and optionally, safety goggles.
-
Indoor shoes must be worn only inside the gym.
-
Speak in a language everyone understands.
-
Help with setup and takedown of nets.
-
Show up on time, do dynamic warm-ups off-court.
-
Court warm-up is limited to 2 minutes.
-
Regroup by skill level to ensure balanced and competitive games.
-
Advanced players are expected to play at least one mixed-level game.
-
Rotate partners after 3 games when possible.
-
Everyone must bring a usable shuttle to play.
🧹 After the Game

Clean up after yourself — birdies, bottles, broken gear.

Stop play 5 minutes before scheduled end time.

Vacate the gym promptly at the end of the session.
🎫 How to Become a Member:

Attend a few drop-in sessions first.
-
Apply for membership only after receiving an official invitation.
-
Do not send payment upfront – Fees are non-refundable.

Previous member rejoining after a year or more break required to remit the new member fee.
Membership includes:
1 voting right at meetings
Access to scheduled gym time (subject to terms)
Inclusion in club activities and communication
🤲 Member Expectations
As a member, you're expected to actively participate in club operations:

Help set up/clean up.

Participate in surveys and AGMs.

Respond to communication or survey in a timely manner.

You are expected to actively contribute their time and effort through volunteering to support the club’s mission and activities. As a community-based club, we rely on the collective participation of our members to operate successfully.

if a member is found to be consistently benefiting from the club without contributing, the club reserves the right to randomly assign responsibilities or volunteer duties on a rotating or as-needed basis. If there is no response or engagement after a couple of reasonable requests to participate, membership may be subject to termination at the discretion of the club. We believe that shared involvement not only strengthens the club, but also enriches

Gym space is shared with schools – school events take priority.

Be patient and respectful if there's a delay or preemption.

Misconduct of any kind — including damage to property, poor sportsmanship, or violations of rules — may lead to immediate dismissal without refund.
